The Differences between Prayer and Meditation

By George A. Boyd © 2003 source:mudrashram.com

Prayer consists of a sequence of steps that provide a sense of communion and communication between the believer and the Divine, as the believer understands the nature of God. These stages of prayer are shown below.

Faith

Forming a belief that the Divine is efficacious (has great powers and can offer help through miraculous means) and cares (is a being of kindness, love, compassion and mercy).

Remembrance

Directing your attention to an inner representation of the Divine.

Supplication

Asking the Divine to meet a perceived need or answer a question.

Inner Listening or Reception

Listening for a verbal response to the prayer or feeling inner comfort in response to your prayer (a sense that the Spirit of the Divine has entered into your nucleus of identity or is communing with your spirit or other inner center). This may become a dialogue where you ask a series of questions or share a variety of concerns and receive responses to each of them.

Thanksgiving and Worship

An expression of gratitude and praise to the Divine to thank Him/Her/It/Them for responding to the prayer.

Reception of Grace or Blessings

In response to thanksgiving and worship, there is a suffusion of energy into the spirit or other inner center that is perceived to be a blessing and acknowledgement that your thanksgiving and worship has been received.

Grounding

Returning your attention to the waking state.

Differences between Meditation and Prayer

Like prayer, meditation focuses attention. It may focus attention in remembrance of the spirit, of an ensouling entity, a nucleus of identity, the goal of spiritual evolution, an inner guide or like prayer, upon one of the forms or aspects of the Divine.

Meditation may use evocation, asking a question or making a request for information to the spirit, an ensouling entity, a nucleus of identity, an inner form of the unconscious mind (archetype) or to a spiritual guide. It may also engage in listening to and receiving guidance from an entity that is evoked. It may also engage in dialogue with the entity that is evoked.

There is also a grounding stage in meditation. After each meditation, the attention returns to normal waking awareness again.

Prayer requires faith in the aspect or form of the Divine to which you pray, whereas meditation does not require faith. Meditation witnesses, studies or interacts with whatever is visualized at the focal point of attention.

Meditation does ask for information through inner dialogue methods, process meditation or inquiry, but does not ask that the object of meditation grant a wish or desire, or intervene on your behalf, or the behalf of another person, institution or social collective (city, country, nation, etc.).

Meditation does not utilize thanksgiving and worship, though it may use chanting to call upon and focus the attention upon one of the forms of the Divine.

Meditation may utilize auric reception, or receiving the Light from a spiritual Master, Initiate or the Divine, which parallels the step of reception of grace and blessings. But auric reception does not follow upon thanksgiving and worship, and is typically a reception of initiatory impulses. Reception of these initiatory impulses has been called Initiation, Shaktipat, or Light Immersion.

Initiation expands the potentials of being at all levels, purifying and illumining the inner vehicles of the ensouling entity. This Light Immersion during meditation may also

  1. convey healing

  2. grant emotional comforting

  3. provide mental guidance or inspiration

  4. give directions for the human will

  5. commune with the spirit and guide it through the Inner Planes

  6. guide the attentional principle through the inner vehicles into union with the ensouling entity

  7. awaken the intuitive wisdom and abilities of the Superconscious Mind

  8. confer Gnosis upon the ensouling entity (identification with the Soul, e.g., to wake up as the Soul).

The reception of grace and blessings in the prayer sequences usually does not convey initiatory impulses and usually focuses on the first four of these elements of a Light Immersion, which may be said to impact the personality or outer life of the individual. The higher four elements may be said to be Transpersonal (referring to aspects of the Superconscious Mind or inner life of the individual), and are less frequently addressed in the reception of the grace and blessings sequence of prayer.

Levels of Prayer

The impulse to prayer may arise at different levels of the mind.

Conscious Mind – These take the form of repetition of a written prayer or repeating a prayer after someone leading a prayer. This type of prayer, called role prayer, is typically used in religious groups as part of their worship ceremonies. These prayers may have limited personal relevance.

Subconscious Mind – You pray in this fashion when you cry out from your pain, suffering or grief, and ask the Divine to help you. This is spontaneous, deeply felt and intensely meaningful to you when you pray in this way. It comes from the "gut", the deep emotional core within you.

Metaconscious Mind – This type of prayer is an articulation of personal questions raised in dialogue with the Divine. These may take the form of asking whether certain courses of action are morally correct or whether your understanding of a scripture or point of doctrine is accurate. They may solicit guidance as to what is the best course of action to take in order to solve a problem. They may seek clarification of the meaning of a scripture or life event. They may request forgiveness for perceived moral transgressions. They may inquire about the nature of the world, of God, and the relationship between God and man. This type of prayer is used to develop a philosophical or theological understanding of God. It arises from the center of the conscience, the intellect and volition of the Metaconscious Mind.

Superconscious Mind – These types of prayers arise from the spirit as intercessory prayers or the ensouling entity as benedictions of so-called "universal prayers." The spirit typically prays on behalf of other people. The universal prayer or benediction invokes blessings for all living beings (like the universal prayer of the Buddhists: "May all beings everywhere find happiness and release from their suffering").

     Efficacy of Prayer

The efficacy of prayer refers to the results of praying (e.g., when you pray, do you get what you ask for?). Efficacy of prayer may be fruitful, in that the supplicant receives the request. It may also be fruitless, in that the subject does not receive the request. Several factors impact the efficacy of prayer.

Getting the Ear of the Divine

Rote prayers, invoked with little feeling or meaning, do not touch the Divine as sincere. This is one of the reasons why Conscious Mind prayers are often not as efficacious.

Faith versus Doubt

People who cultivate scientific or empirical skepticism may find it difficult to believe in the Divine or in the miraculous power of the Divine. They may abandon prayer and even ridicule it as superstitious or childish. Those who have strong faith in the power of the Divine experience much better efficacy than those who pray but have doubts about the existence of God.

Lack of Focus

If the attention is wandering and is not focused upon the Inner Form of the Divine, then parts of the supplication may be lost and your ability to receive the Divine response during the inner listening and reception phase of prayer may be compromised.

Covert Anger at God

If you are still feeling resentment at the Divine for not granting one or more of your desires or expectations, it may decrease your desire to pray and may also lower your expectation that your prayer(s) will be granted (effectively undermining your faith). You may also be angry with God for not saving a loved one from death or tragedy. These half-hearted prayers charged with your ambivalence come across as insincere. Here you need to clean up your relationship with your Higher Power to get better results.

Obsessive Prayer

Here you pray without ceasing, repeating the same prayer over and over and over, with great intensity and fervor. Obsessive prayer is unnecessary: God heard you the first time. Obsessive prayer is also obnoxious and annoying.

Doubting the Divine Wisdom

The Divine Will may often be inscrutable and incomprehensible to you. Sometimes it doesn’t seem fair, doesn’t seem right, doesn’t seem reasonable, doesn’t seem kind or merciful or doesn’t respect or honor your preferences. Sometimes it may genuinely be for your highest good to not receive the boon for which you pray (you may not be mature or wise enough to use it rightly in the present time in your life). Sometimes you must undergo the pain, suffering, grief and unrequited longing as part of your Pralabdha karma or destiny. God may not lift these things from you, as they are a part of the template of learning upon which your life is founded. These issues may also be retribution in evil deeds in past lives, in which case you must bear the karmic sentence with patience and fortitude.

Spiritual Pride

In this scenario, you come to believe that you are righteous, highly spiritually advanced, possessed of great virtue and wisdom, are highly favored and chosen by God and, naturally, God will always attend to you right away and fulfill all of your desires upon demand. This narcissistic approach to God usually does not produce fruit, as pomp and piety do not nurture the humility and sincerity that touch the Merciful Heart of God. The advice of Lord Jesus, to become as a little child – to humble yourself – produces much better results.

Relative Depths of Prayer

Prayers from the Subconscious Mind and Superconscious Mind are more direct conduits to the Mercy Seat. Praying from these emotionally poignant centers, from the core of your human pain and from your spirit, often get better results than distant rote prayer and intellectualized theological prayers.

 Prayer and Affirmation

The so-called prayer of faith, "believing that having prayed for a boon, you have already received it," is really an aspect of affirmation. An affirmation is a visualized thought seed that is anchored in the Superconscious Mind. You may see the results of your affirmation (visualization), repeat a phrase to anchor it in the Superconscious Mind (decree, fiat or affirmation), and feel that it shall be made manifest (faith, expectation).

The Superconscious Mind is creative and manifests the seeds anchored in its Plenum. Part of the efficacy of prayer may be due to the fact that as you invoke the Divine to grant your wish, you also anchor an affirmation in the Superconscious Mind. The Divine may only have to nurture your seed that you have already planted to allow it to bear fruit. Indeed, the fulfillment of many of your prayers may actually be the fructifying of affirmation seeds that you planted long ago with great fervor and desire.

Affirmation may be a useful adjunct to prayer, as may meditation. We encourage you to learn more about affirmation and other invocational methods in order to enhance your spiritual life.

Those wishing to learn about invocational methods and other forms of meditation may find the Mudrashram® Master Course in Meditation useful. This foundation course will give you a comprehensive introduction to meditation theory and methods, as well as giving you understanding about the process of initiation.

Three General Wonderful Prayer/Affirmations

source: indigorecords.com

Remembering it is so important to be thankful and vibrate from a perspective that you already are manifesting the feelings or things you are asking for, the following is a wonderful prayer/thank you.

You may say it everyday, or for 21 days to achieve a feeling of well-being, security and change:

From the god/goddess of my being I give thanks for the love that I am.

I give thanks for the love in my life and for the love that surrounds me.

Thank you. Thank you for the miracle of life that I am and for the miracle of life that I see all about me. Thank you for the gift of life.

Thank you for my perfect body, my health and vitality.

Thank you. Thank you for the abundance that I  am and the abundance that I see reflected all about me.

Thank you for the riches and the richness of my life, and thank you for the river of money that flows to me. Thank you. Thank you for the excitement and the adventure of the millions of wondrous possibilities and probabilities. Thank you.

Thank you for the beauty and the harmony.

Thank you for the peace and tranquillity.

Thank you for the wonderment and thank you for the joy.

Thank you for the laughter and the play. And thank you for the privilege of serving and  sharing the gift that I am. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

(From Sedona Magazine 1998)

Remember that these words, feelings, must be conveyed with strong conviction and emotion. You are worthy, the co-creator, are ready for all these things, and are visualizing and vibrating the feeling that you already have them.

If the fear comes in to say “No, you don’t”, release it.

A Beautiful Affirmation:

The Infinite Order that expresses the Cosmic Principle of life (God/Creator/God Spirit) is both around and within me. It is a continual operation of intelligence, harmony and creativity. From the depths of my being to the most external aspect of my existence, the perfect action of God is forever at work.

In this creative process, all that I could possibly need exists. I recognize this Truth and see fulfilled living as the expression of my life right now.

Any past experiences of a negative nature no longer influence or manipulate me.

My recognition of the One Source of Good instantly eliminates anything that would limit my view of life.

Today and now I completely accept myself as an expression of the beauty, balance and order of the Spirit.

I rejoice in the good that is mine.  I am at peace, and I am very well.

Another Beautiful Prayer/Affirmation

Be still and let go

I claim now for myself that I release all yesterday's thoughts

They do not become the center of my life

I erase now all the foreign thoughts in my Consciousness

I become open and receptive to this inner calling

I respond and allow all good things to flow into my reservoir of life

It is filled with

Health

Happiness

Harmony

Knowledge

Wisdon

Intelligence

Which now becom my life

Each one is part of the Universe

And the Universe is filled with Love

I rejoice in this knowledge

For my life is part of the Universal Life

I am the Original Blessing and bless all who come within my sphere

My healing is within whatever channel is needed

It is permanent

For my Consciousness is within the concrete foundation

For GOD/Creation/Universe and I are One

The Divine Order of my life is now fulfilled with ease

Because I remake the Me by my beliefs

(Courtesy of "The Privilege of Choice" by Dr. Norma Sackheim)

You can create your own visualizations and affirmations.

You are co-creator and know what affirmations and visualizations are appropriate for you.  If you seek a specific goal it is very helpful, as stated in Prayer 101, to write it down, thus helping the mind to focus, and repeat it every day, or for a specific goal, 21 days, rest for seven, and then continue if necessary.    Creating your own affirmations and visualizations will keep things “interesting” and prevent your mind from getting bored, it being harder to inject emotion into the same “old” repeated affirmations.

It would be helpful to include the following elements in your affirmations:

All is perfect, whole and complete.

All is well in my world.

I deserve the best and am worthy to accept the best, now.

I embrace abundance.

I am always safe, protected and guided.

I am healthy.

I am free.

(Remember to imagine and feel the emotions of these things).

Affirmation, Prayers, and Blessings by Sirona Knight

Editor's Note: While the following article focuses on connecting with the blessings of Goddess energy, you can substitute whatever other term you are comfortable with to invoke the Divine Energy.

The power of affirmation, prayer, and blessing has been used for thousands of years in both spiritual and folk rites, by priestesses and priests, and by people trying to bring health, harmony, and happiness into their lives. In earlier times at the gigantic stone temples that dot the English countryside, high priestesses would call in the divine powers and blessings of the Goddess.

Many blessings and prayers have been passed down in oral traditions for generations before finally being written down. Often the old texts are wonderful resources for your own blessings, prayers, and affirmations. As with anything, their meanings change with time and use. Reinvented by each new generation, through time they have developed a mythic universality. An example is the following Goddess blessing, based on an old Irish prayer.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm on your face
May the moon glow soft upon your door

And the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again,
May the Goddess bless
And hold you in her loving arms.

How Affirmations, Prayers, and Blessings Work

Positive thinking works. It's a matter of having faith not only in the affirmation, prayer, and blessing, but also in who you are, without distorting that image into something that is not you. There are ways to empower yourself so you can go out and be in the world, and no matter what happens, you can come out of any situation with what you want and feeling good about yourself.

Affirmations, prayers, and blessings start out as a conscious process. Each time you get up in the morning and tell yourself you are a healthy, wonderful human being and that you are moving toward your goals, you are reinforcing the positive elements of the affirmation. The more you reinforce this feeling on a conscious level, then the more your subconscious begins to pick up on it. This ritual initiates change on a personal level. Suddenly you begin to have faith in yourself and in your skills. You realize that you have the ability to be the person you truly want to be. Any self-doubt that you harbored over the years begins to dissipate, replaced by a sense of personal power that previously you had only dreamed was possible.

Much of your self-doubt comes from your socialization, which begins at an early age with your culture, parents, siblings, and interactions with other people. Affirmations, prayers, and blessings can overcome this self-doubt and replace it with something positive. You are basically composting what doesn't work about your life, so it can be used to grow better and more healthy personal patterns.

How to Create Affirmations, Prayers, and Blessings

You can customize your affirmations, prayers, and blessings to fit your personal situation, making them even more powerful. After you do a few affirmations and begin to understand the simple formula, you will have fun adapting and creating your own.

Each affirmation, prayer, and blessing is directed toward a basic goal. You want a certain outcome as a result of repeating the affirming words. This is your expectation and intention. Sometimes the question, "what do you want?" seems unanswerable, but if you break it down into its different parts, suddenly the question won't seem quite so overwhelming. Take it a step at a time, and ask yourself, "What would I be doing in my life if time and money were not considerations?"

Affirmations, prayers, and blessings work best when they address specific issues. When you begin creating your own affirmations, this is something to keep in mind. Work from the specific to the whole. Like double vision, you must always be looking not only at the present, but also how the present will affect the future. Your life patterns work on many levels simultaneously.

Modern psychology uses positive affirmations, prayers, and blessings as tools to help people change their mental patterns. Ancient mystery traditions used them as ways for communing with the divine Goddess, the Mother of all life. It is from her womb we are all born.

To create a simple affirmation, I begin with a basic phrase consisting of one or two lines. Keeping it short and to the point makes it easier to remember and makes repetition easy. A basic affirmation for healing is as follows:

Today and every day, I feel the healing power of the Goddess flowing through me.

Once you have a basic affirmation to work from, you can then begin to tailor it to fit other situations and needs. If you are at period in your life where you need wisdom, you can change the affirmation to fit your situation.

Today and every day, I feel the divine wisdom of the Goddess filling my body, mind, and spirit.

To give the affirmation more power, you can call upon a particular Goddess to help give you the wisdom you need. Keep repeating the lines until you begin to feel the power of that Goddess entering into you. You may feel shivers on your skin, for example. You will feel a sense of wisdom in knowing that you are being helped to make the right choice. Imagine in your mind's eye the great Celtic Goddess Anu, whose main power was her motherly wisdom, as you repeat the following affirmation to yourself.

Today and every day, I feel the divine wisdom of the Great Mother Goddess Anu filling my body, mind, and spirit, and helping me to make the best choices possible.

You can even add your name to personalize the wording even more. For example,

Today and every day, I, Sirona, feel the divine wisdom of the Great Mother Goddess Anu filling my body, mind, and spirit, and helping me to make the best choices possible.

As with the old Irish blessing at the beginning of this chapter, another way of personalizing affirmations, prayers, and blessings is to adapt or rewrite one that you really love that fits the situation. Early Christians rewrote many pagan affirmations, prayers, and blessings, which took on a universal and archetypical nature over centuries of continual adaptation. The idea is to take something that works and make it better. Just change the wording so it's more personal and better suits your needs.

Successful Affirmations, Prayers, and Blessings

To make your affirmations, prayers, and blessings more successful, set up a sacred space for doing them, and imagining clearly exactly what you want to accomplish. By doing these two things, you give your affirmations, prayers, and blessings a place to be and a structure, which will provide better results.

To create a sacred space in your home, office, or garden for doing affirmations, prayers, and blessings, pick a place that is out of the way and private. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate, but just a space in your home or yard where you feel comfortable. Place an image of the Goddess or something that represents her in your space. This can be anything from a statue, a favorite rock, or if you're outside, a tree or plant that resonates with Goddess energy.

Besides something signifying the Goddess, sacred space objects that you have a kinship with work as well, such as a lucky coin for prosperity affirmations, prayers, and blessings, or the picture of a loved one when working on love. Other things you can bring into your sacred space include objects that signify the elements, such as incense for air, a candle for fire, a glass of juice, wine, or other liquid for water, and a potted plant in soil for earth. Beyond this, you can add most anything into your sacred space, such as scented oils or crystals and gemstones, that help you stay focused and directed when doing your affirmations, prayers, and blessings.

To make your affirmations, prayers, and blessings more successful, have a clear intention of what you want. By imagining what you want from the affirmation, prayer, or blessing, you give definite direction to where you are going with it. As you recite the line of an affirmation, prayer, or blessing, hold the image of what want in your mind: see it; feel it; sense it completely; be it! Once you step into the divine domain of the Goddess, you are summoning an energy that knows no bounds. You are releasing an eternal power that can wield incredible results!

When you adjourn to your sacred space, begin by reading the affirmation, prayer, or blessing out loud to yourself. When you do so you are engaging three senses: your eyes in reading, the sensation of your voice in your chest as you read, and your ears in hearing the words when you speak them aloud. As you read the affirmation, prayer, or blessing, feel its natural cadence. See it in your mind, feel it in your senses, and be it with your total self. When done in this way, affirmations, prayers, and blessings become a way for you to unleash your full potential.

The Power of Repetition

Verbal repetition has always been a part of spirituality. Many spiritual traditions, such as that of Buddhists and Druids, use repetition as a way for reaching a divine state. Reaching a divine state makes whatever you do afterward that much more powerful.

Keeping affirmations, prayers, and blessings short makes them easy to remember, repeat, and use wherever you go. Repetition creates an altered state, making you more receptive to the positive intention of the affirmation, prayer, or blessing.

An altered state can also make you more receptive to connecting with the energy of the Goddess. You can make affirmations, prayers, and blessings happen on your own, but when you ask for the divine help of the Goddess, you add infinite power to whatever you do. It is not a matter of control; it is a matter of cooperative intention. As I have stressed before, it important to have a clear idea of what you want.

The ancient technique of repeating the Goddesses' names for healing, guidance, and protection is at the heart of the practice of affirmation, prayer, and blessing. By using a particular Goddess's name, you invoke her power. By repeating her name, you create an altered state that builds a rapport with the Goddess. You enter into a divine state of being that is One with the Goddess.

In the case of longer affirmations, prayers, and blessings, the more you repeat the affirmation, the more impact it will have. The repetition at certain times of the day becomes a sort of tradition within your life. Building traditions is important when making patterns that you want to continue into the future.

Repetition is at the heart of the idea of patterns, which is what the Goddess is all about. The annual cycles of the Earth — spring, summer, autumn, and winter — are her many faces as she progresses through the year. In Celtic culture, it was the duty of the bard to remember and record through story and song the many blessings, invocations, and affirmations of the prevailing times. As they came down through the generations, these stories began to take on mythic qualities. This is the way of mythology. It is always being created and recreated.

The same is true of affirmations, prayers, and blessings. If one person says an affirmation, prayer, or blessing, it produces an energy that can change his or her life. If a billion people recite an affirmation, prayer, or blessing, its energy can change the very fabric of humanity. We could actually make human thought itself kinder and more compassionate and embrace love and peace as mainstays in our lives.

Timing and Practice

Affirmations, prayers, and blessings can be done during the day or at night. Just upon waking, just before going to sleep, and at set times periodically throughout the day are the best times to practice them. They work best when you incorporate them into your daily routine. Some of the best times for doing affirmations, prayers, and blessings are in the morning, before meals, when you are feeling stressed out or depleted of energy, and in the evening. At these times you'll find yourself more receptive to the positive effect that affirmations, prayers, and blessings can have on your overall psyche.

When you get up in the morning, your mind still lingers between the dream and waking worlds, making it more open to suggestion. By doing affirmations, prayers, and blessings before your mind has a chance to fully awaken, you have an open route into your subconscious.

Mornings are the time when most people begin their day, and as such, are a time of preparation and expectation. Morning affirmations, prayers, and blessings are best centered around the idea of revitalizing you and preparing for the day. Affirmations, prayers, and blessings that set daily goals and reaffirm your expectations for the day are excellent to do in the morning when the energy is fresh.

Before meals are a good times for affirmations, prayers, and blessings because most of us have a set time or pattern for meals on a daily basis. By incorporating these rituals into your mealtime, you give sustenance to your spirit, and at the same time, you give sustenance to your body. Also, before meals is excellent time to thank the Goddess for the food on your table and to ask for her blessings.

Often during the day you have times when the stress level goes way up or you suddenly feel very depleted of energy. Both of these are excellent times for doing affirmations, prayers, and blessings. You can do affirmations, prayers, and blessings that will calm and relax you, as well as invigorate and empower you, depending on what you need.

Evenings also offer an excellent time for doing affirmations, prayers, and blessings. Whereas mornings are about expectation, evenings are a time of reflection. Also evenings are usually a time of play and romance rather than work. Thus your evening affirmations, prayers, and blessings need to be more reflective but at the same time filled with love and merriment.

Positive Affirmations source: vitalaffirmations.com

Positive Affirmations work. This page explains how and why positive affirmations can be used to manifest your needs and bring positive and permanent change to your life. You will also learn how to Create and supercharge your own affirmations.

What are Affirmations?

Every thought you think every word you say is an affirmation All of our self-talk or inner dialogue is a stream of affirmations. We are continually affirming subconsciously with our words and thoughts and this flow of affirmations is creating our life experience in every moment. Our beliefs are just learned thought patterns that we have developed since childhood, many of these work well for us, but others may now be working against us, they are dysfunctional and may be sabotaging us from achieving what we believe we want. Every affirmation we think or say is a reflection of our inner truth or beliefs. It is important to realize that many of these "inner truths" may not actually be true for us now or may be based on invalid or inappropriate impressions we constructed as children, which if examined as an adult can be exposed as inappropriate.

Our subconscious uses the behaviour patterns we have learned to automatically respond and react to many everyday events in our life. This is essential to our survival, we need to be able to respond quickly to events around us which would be impossible if we had to re-examine every aspect of things every time something simple happens. Our learned responses and thought patterns enable us to automatically respond to circumstances quickly and easily. Problems arise however, if at an early stage some of the foundation beliefs on which many of the others are built were formed from a skewed perspective, maybe the strategy was appropriate for a perceived difficult circumstance, however often such beliefs are totally inappropriate for succeeding in the real world as adults.

You can use "Positive Affirmations", which are usually short positive statements targeted at a specific subconscious set of beliefs, to challenge  and undermine negative beliefs and to replace them with positive self-nurturing beliefs. It is a kind of "brainwashing" only you get to choose which negative beliefs to wash away. The way these statements are constructed is extremely important. Later I will show you how to construct you own affirmations. It is important to remember of course that everything we say and think is a positive affirmation, using positive affirmation statements forces us to keep focussed on our inner goals and reminds us to think consciously about our words and thoughts and to modify them to reflect our positive affirmation.

Do affirmations work

YES! Affirmations really work. You will be hard pushed to find any self help program anywhere that does not include affirmations, even the ones that appear to pooh-pooh affirmations include them under some slightly different guise. And the reason for this is, they work. The more determined you are to make your changes, the more you are prepared to accept change and let go of the past, the better they will work for you.

Why affirmations work

By choosing to think and say positive affirmations as true, the subconscious is forced into one of two reactions - avoidance or reappraisal. The bigger the issue the bigger the gap between the positive affirmation and the perceived inner truth and the more likely that one is going to experience resistance. This is where the subconscious finds it easier to stay with its perceived inner truth and avoid the challenge using any means at its disposal to avoid examining the issue. You will recognise this reaction by a strong negative feeling inside as you state the positive affirmations. Equally if your experience a sense of joy and well being, your mind is instinctively responding to something it believes to be true. When you get this emotion, you know your affirmations are working!

Continually repeating affirmations with conviction and passion will chip away at even the strongest resistance. However there are a number of additional techniques you can use that will super-charge your affirmations and magnify their effectiveness many fold. I will outline these techniques for you later. Once the resistance is broken, your subconscious is able to re-examine the core belief and patterns you have been working on. The effect can be startling and things can change very quickly as the dysfunctional beliefs get identified and replaced by your own new inner truth. Depending on how deep into your consciousness these beliefs lay, every other learned pattern and belief that relied on the original belief as a premise, becomes unfounded. The subconscious has to re-examine them all, this can lead to a period of introspection. If you find yourself experiencing serious resistance or have identified an area of trauma in your life, I strongly urge you to seek professional support, the journey you are embarking on will release you from the past but having proper support around you as you go through the process will make it so much easier.

Because affirmations actually reprogram your thought patterns, they change the way you think and feel about things, and because you have replaced dysfunctional beliefs with your own new positive beliefs, positive change comes easily and naturally. This will start to reflect in your external life, you will start to experience seismic changes for the better in many aspects of your life.

How quickly do affirmations work

From day one, there will be affirmations you love and enjoy saying, these affirmations are likely to be very effective for you and you are likely to start experience changes almost immediately. Others will feel very negative, almost like a big lie, this indicates resistance and these areas may take longer to impact. How quickly you can resolve an issue like this is like asking how long is a piece of string. It depends on the issue, how deeply the belief is held and how determined you are to bring about change in that area of your life, the latter being perhaps the most important of all. If you are truly ready and want to make changes, the quicker those changes will come for you. People have made cognitive changes in their beliefs almost instantaneously, once you are prepared to embrace and accept a change and you believe it to be right for you from your very heart, then that change will happen. So it is not really a question of time, more a question of how accepting of change you can be.

However, you should be under no illusion that by embarking on this process you are starting a journey for your lifetime. As you see and experience the techniques working for yourself will be driven to explore your inner-self further and other techniques. As you make your changes in one aspect of your life, other issues will pop up that you may want to deal with. The joy is, you would now have the knowledge and skill to deal with these issues effectively.

Will Affirmations help me?

Yes. No matter what aspect of life you're dealing with or who you are, affirmations will not only make you feel better about yourself and your life. But if used correctly, they can manifest real change in your life. Changing the way you think, reprogramming your mind and removing the old negative beliefs that have been sabotaging you again and again throughout your life. They can enable you to achieve the life you've always wanted for yourself!

Why doesn't everyone use Affirmations?

They do! It has been demonstrated that nearly 90% of our thoughts are negative, no wonder we find ourselves struggling. Each negative thought or word is a negative affirmation and these nasty little beasts can be even more powerful than positive affirmations because we often find them easier to accept. It is these negative thoughts that feed and validate our negative internal beliefs. Under this kind of negative bombardment most people simply do not have the strength to break free of their negative thoughts and become hopelessly locked into their own (usually false) negative beliefs.

Positive affirmations are designed to challenge those negative beliefs and start to stem the flow of negative thoughts and words that seek to validate them. Affirmations are more than just repeating words. It is a whole process of becoming aware of your thoughts and words in everyday life, choosing to think and project happy positive thoughts. The more you can consciously inject the spirit of you affirmations into your daily thoughts and words, the quicker they will work for you.

How to create your own affirmations

Start by taking some time to think about areas in your life you would like to improve and how you might want your life to be. It is worth taking some time over this process. Write the most important ones down in a list.

Now look at each item on the list and write out a few positive statements for each. They must be positive and in the present tense, focus on what you do want, not on what you don't want.

For example if my list of things that were important to me included... "A fulfilling job"

My affirmation might look like this "I have a wonderful job that fulfils me on many levels"

Creating your own affirmations is the perfect way to get the right affirmations for you. If have included a few further samples below, as well as links to some affirmation lists (above). These should give you a good idea on how they should look and feel. If you sign up to the AffirmIt! program you will receive very specialised affirmations that are designed to tackle specific issues as you commence and progress through the process. For example, in the early stages, some of the affirmations you will receive will be "releasing" in nature, these are designed to assist you in overcoming any initial resistance to the process. Here is an example of a very simple releasing affirmation.

"I am ready and willing to release the past, now"

Supercharging Affirmations

As I have said earlier, there are other techniques you can use that can super-charge the effectiveness of your affirmations. I will outline a few here briefly, if you are interested in really making your affirmations work and want even more details, this area is extensively covered in the the Basic Affirmation eGuide which you can download for free.

Affirmation Mirror work

Perhaps the most powerful way of using affirmations is to state them whilst looking in the mirror. Some of the most important messages you have received have been from people looking you straight in the eye. By looking yourself in the eye as you state your affirmation you magnify the importance of the message to yourself.

Written Affirmations

A great way of keeping your affirmation at the forefront of your mind is to write them down, leave notes or cards around so that you notice them throughout the day. The AffirmIt! program uses mobile technology to text powerful messages to you with the goal of keeping your mind focussed on your intention. Another idea is to write your affirmation down many times (10-20), this helps imprint it on your mind.

Say Affirmations with Passion

Say your affirmations with passion, the higher your emotional state as you say them, the more effective they are.
